I am honored to run the Boston Marathon on behalf of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute because my family, like so many others, has been touched by cancer.

In 2005, my Aunt Norma succumbed to colon cancer. She was my Dad's youngest sister, a mother to four daughters and one son, and a light in our lives. She was the funny one. I believe I inherited her sense of humor, as Aunt Norma was always the life of the party. I remember a trip to Las Vegas a few years ago when Aunt Norma and Aunt Adeline stayed up all night playing slot machines. They even outlasted me!

If my legs begin to ache during the race, I will draw on Aunt Norma - her warm laugh and her sunny spirit - for inspiration.

Donate Now to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Valerie,

I am from Massachusetts, and am so inspired by your run! My family and I have been going to the marathon since I was a child (I'm now 38)and now bring my own family. I have wanted to run it as long as I can remember. I still hope to some day. We are going again this year and I hope to give you a shout out of encouragement! Good luck!

I turned 60 last September. I had gastric bypass surgery a year ago last January and have lost 116 pounds so far (15.5 to go to goal), and I'm running my first half marathon on May 2nd with my athletic daughter. I heard you talking about your prep for the Boston Marathon. Good luck to you! I know first hand what the training is like. My longest run so far has been 6 miles. I swear I'm going to make the 13.1 by May 2nd..just because! I'm with you...I feel the best I've ever felt in my life...I haven't run since I was a little kid, so this is BIG for me!! Good luck!!
